Following the Memorial Day holiday, trash collection was delayed one day, as always following a holiday. But our neighbors north of Persimmon did not get their trash picked up on Saturday, as ours was. My wife heard from residents they were told by City Hall they would have to drag their refuse back in their garages and wait another full week for collection! Holy cow! It was bad enough seeing the streets littered with garbage strewn about, but hearing that it would not be collected until the following week brought visions of animals, assorted vermin and a huge mess in the neighborhood. I understand that Mr. Capretta was contacted and did what he has always done: serve his neighbors well. I am not sure what thinking went into the first decision by our city managers, but I am glad (as always) that Anthony Capretta has our backs. Well done, Councilman Capretta (and thank you)! Anthony Capretta was there for me when I needed help
To the Editor:
I want to thank my councilman, Anthony Capretta, for returning my phone call and helping me with an emergency this past winter. A city snow plow accidentally ran over and buried my cable box, located on the tree lawn. The cable company refused to send a technician out to my home because the cable box was buried under snow. They told me it was my responsibility as the homeowner to dig it out and make access for them to make any repairs.
Meanwhile, my cable and Internet was out. I called the City of Brunswick and they said they could not help me because there were not enough resources. Next, I called Councilman Capretta. He returned my phone call right away and offered to help me by stopping by my house himself. When Councilman Capretta saw how deep the snow was he brought another Council person to help. They found the damaged cable box and made a clear access for the cable company to come out and restore my cable and Internet service. Councilman Capretta offered me excellent customer service!

Anthony Capretta
Because he was elected by the voters to two terms in office, Capretta said he is looking to make a return to council where he intends to serve his constituents as a "resident advocate." During his council tenure, Capretta said he believes he acted in this capacity by introducing two sexual predator ordinances designed to protect the community; lobbying for the return of the branch chipping and street cleaning programs; and by advocating for the completion of storm sewer projects in the Meadowbrook, Garfield, McKinley and Manitoulin neighborhoods.
With roads, foreclosures and economic development topping his list of concerns for the city, Capretta said he plans to be responsive to the wishes of his constituents.
"I would be responsive to the wishes of my constituents and not seek new taxes until I have worked with council and the city manager to be fully transparent and accountable for tax dollars and grant monies currently available to the city for roads," he said.
With regard to foreclosures, Capretta said that if elected, he intends to work with the city manager to seek avenues that would promote home refinance opportunities to keep people in their homes.
Capretta said he also intends to push for economic development, which would include large outdoor retailers, such as a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's, as well as additional restaurants, hotels and a water park.
"A water park would draw people to the city from all over the state," he said. "This in turn would promote all of Brunswick's businesses and promote employment opportunities close to home."
